Love Will Tear Us Apart

this project deals with:

the song. i read an internet truth that ian curtis wrote this song in reaction to ‘love will keep us together’, by neil sedaka (1960) and covered by captain and tennille in 1975. joy division recorded love will tear us apart in 1979.

the way the music world reacts to this song. the list of covers is extensive, many bands name joy division and ian curtis as a major influence. when you consider the original, and how haunting curtis’ vocals are and heartbreaking the lyrics are, it is a complete change of perspective when you hear some of the more poppy versions – it’s depressing in a reverse way.

my favourite versions are by: susanna and the magical orchestra, hawksley workman, in the nursery, and worm is green.

suicide. i thought there would be more musician suicides. i found 53. most of them are men. conclusions: 1) shooting oneself seems to be a surefire way of ending it 2) try not to shoot anyone else on your way out. the youngest musician to commit suicide was 19 and this was an obscure young man who was also danielle steele’s son. he died of a heroin overdose. overdosing is actually one of the least common methods of suicide for musicians, but i believe that is all just a matter of perspective.
