Ayaz Kamani

I am Ayaz Kamani practicing artist in Canada. The part of my background that is pertinent to this project is not my culture; it is my parents, who are both Doctors. One of which is an Obstetrical Anesthesiologist.

I have been raised, for the most part, to view the institution of Medicine in high esteem, a normative ideology. I do have first experience in the flaws of the medical system, as well as a pre-conceived societal notion that Medicine is somewhat of a miracle worker. I know that medicine is an imperfect system that has theories of science, which is evolutionary and ephemeral.

Midwifery forwards patient ideals that are draining from a pressured medical system, which has formed a stubborn ego over the years. Midwifery philosophy involves family, community, and puts environmental and psychological mentalities of the patient on a vital pedestal. Both midwifery and obstetrics approach the same issue for the same end result, however, everything in between is vastly different. Midwifery ideals need to be re-injected into the medical system and a gradual marriage is the only way to ease the historically rooted medical ego.
