Artist Statement
My current practice weaves a common thematic thread through the animal-avatar. Forming a loose conceptual basis around emotion and relationships, I use text as an integral element to suggest narrative and to incorporate a sense of humour that can also be disturbing: integrating colloquial language with interspecies imagery. Drawing on the confessional “I” and the accusatory “You”, the vernacular forms an exchange whereby the viewer is drawn into the conversation, reaching across species and personal boundaries.
By incorporating sometimes accusatory and questioning speech with animal imagery and “feminine” fabrics (flowered, soft coloured), I am pairing unsettling concepts with aesthetic materials and traditions of feminine craft. By doing so I am drawing the viewer in to an aesthetic object that also threatens to disturb conventional notions of gender and species. |
